Lessons for Kids
For kids, the approach is all about having fun, and letting the music teach technique and theory as we work our way through songs from the simplest on up. The goal: to develop a love of music that creates natural self-motivation and fuels an engaging musical journey that can last a lifetime from beginner to advanced.
A beginner lesson
Learn to tune your instrument, play an ear-training game, check-in about progress since last week, and learn a song. Find out some basic music theory and techniques for your instrument as we play. Wrap up with questions and plan what to play during the week between lessons.
Whether you are a complete beginner, or have some experience already and want more structure to your learning, the lessons are all about meeting you where you're at and supporting your goals. Robin aims to help you develop a well-rounded grasp of the instrument and music theory while at the same time focusing on your particular interests.
Quick tuning check, check in on the week's practice and specific questions you might have, then...from here it depends on your goals. While learning a song, we could cover a new scale, helpful techniques for fingering on the instrument, analyze chords, do some ear training, practice reading or writing music, or practice learning by ear. Either way, lessons are balanced by both focused work and expansive playing. It's called 'playing' music after all! Make sure you are learning because it's fun and you're curious.

I’ve really enjoyed fiddle lessons with Robin! I started taking lessons with him 3 1/2 years ago, brand new to the fiddle, and it has been a joy to learn and play music with him. He is a great teacher and musician, and is good at gradually adding in more layers of learning, and continuing to gently circle round to tips and reminders that sometimes you need to keep hearing. He has a creative approach to teaching and playing music, is observant and encouraging, a lot of fun to learn from, and certainly was helpful as I went from a progression of hardly knowing how to pick up the bow to now having a pile of songs under my belt and really enjoying playing. I highly recommend him!

Robin has made violin such a joy for my daughter. She looks forward to her weekly lessons, feels deeply inspired by Robin's sense of fun, and has developed a love for creating music over the last years as his student. If you have the opportunity to take lessons from Robin or have him teach your kid(s), do it! He's the greatest!

I like the way Robin teaches, some by the book, some by ear, providing well rounded instruction. Robin is kind, joyful, and talented. We experienced an immediate and positive response in our students when she began lessons with Robin.
Robin is a great teacher! I've been taking weekly fiddle lessons from him for over a year and a half now. As one of his adult students, I appreciate the breadth of his musical knowledge and experience. He is very observant. And his insights into changes that I can make to improve my playing are extremely helpful. He is also very good at opening up musical possibilities, new vantage points and then inviting students to explore. Robin is skillful at both encouraging and challenging his students.. He does it with such respect, humor and kindness that it motivates, and instills a love of playing music. I feel like my playing has improved greatly, and far more quickly than I would have thought possible. Robin is very personable and easy to receive instruction from. His easy going manner makes difficult challenges seem doable and within reach, with a little practice. I highly recommend him as a teacher.

Both of my kids have a great experience learning from Robin. With their previous teacher, music quickly became a chore that they were uninterested in. Robin does a great job keeping the lessons fun and nourishing a in them a LOVE of music. Even though the practice time suggested is the same as in the past, they practice without complaining or resistance. They have even taken to going out and learning new songs on their own, eagerly awaiting their lessons to be able to show Robin. They always look forward to their time with him, even with being on zoom and not in person. Now that I think of it, their first year they loved lessons with him so much that they ended up doing two each per week. In retrospect, it was a great way to get their momentum and enthusiasm going. It seemed really satisfying to them to be making so much progress. Our schedule didn’t allow for us to continue with two per week, but it was great while it lasted. On the parent end, Robin is very organized and both straightforward and pleasant to communicate with. We have had a wonderful experience these past two years having lessons with him.
