SKills Classes |
Our Skills Classes cover some of the basic and advanced survival skills that were once common knowledge to our ancestors on all continents.
Whether you want be prepared with skills to survive an emergency, or learn the lore and history behind a craft, or just make something useful, we've got you covered. We draw on our experience from the Stone Age Living Project (with Lynx Vilden), trips with Matt Graham, skills gatherings, the Origins Project (with Bushmen in Botswana, Africa, with Jon Young) and 'survival trips' where we intentionally traveled without gear to learn directly from the Earth how to survive and thrive.
Curriculum...The curriculum includes topics that are NOT listed in the descriptions; these "soft" skills are critical as well, for without Awareness or Attitude, for example, or knowing how to blend with the landscape, the "hard" skills are utterly useless! For this reason, to encourage these Skills Classes to be taken as a series, we are offering a discount for taking three or more classes.
Cost...Our intention is to make these skills available at an affordable price, and cost of materials is already included. We are also discounting the classes as a series. Prices are listed at the end of each description.
Ages...Some of our classes are open to adults and children. Modeled after the Bushmen 'village model' of learning, we believe it is important to have mixed ages. We will teach at your level. Children under 8 need an accompanying adult. Adults coming without children: we expect you to produce quality work at your level (and inspire the kids!). Some classes are for a certain age group either kids, teens or adults.

Cost: $90 Arrow Making and Archery Class October 25 - Sunday (10am-3pm) Come make your own arrow and shoot your bow. We will discuss the basics of archery from both a target and hunting perspective, and then put our knowledge to the test on some fun targets. This is a great class for beginners and for intermediate archers who want to pick up some new tips, as we will also cover snap-shooting, instinctive, dominant eye, and small-group techniques. Bring your own bow, or tell us ahead of time and we'll bring one for you to use. Cost: $60 November 2015
December 2015 Flintknapping, Arrowheads, & Manzanita Cider: December 6 - Sunday (10am-3pm) Make your own Arrowhead or cutting edge and make a thirst-quenching drink from the Manzanita Berries of our region. "Flintknapping" is the art & science of making tools from stone (such as obsidian or chert). We will cover the basics of percussion and pressure knapping for making stone tools, and then everyone will get a chance to 'break some rocks'. Then, we will clean up and learn to make Manzanita Cider, a mild and wild lemonade-like beverage from our local landscape! Cost: $60 Baynut Truffles: Local, Wild Chocolate? December 13 - Sunday (10am-3pm) Join us for this delicious class honoring the California bay tree. We will learn how to prepare food from 'bay nuts'. We will also include other wild foods in season, stories, and a truffle-making contest. Cost: $50 Arrow Making: Pitch Glue, Flintknapping, & Fletching February 24 (Saturday), 10am-3pm, $40 - $75 s/s Come make an arrow in the old-fashioned way - in the morning make your own glue out of sap, learn how arrowheads are made, and then in the afternoon, fletch your own arrow with real feathers and sinew and haft (attach) a point onto it with the morning's batch of pitch glue. You'll go home with a stick of pitch glue and an arrow you made by hand. Bring lunch, water, and a non-serrated carving knife. January
